This project is considered a cornerstone of McGill’s first year studio. We were asked to choose a plate from one of Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s famous prison etches, and expand the perspectives depicted from his imaginary world into our own larger composition.
Plate VII, “The Drawbridge”, was my immediate choice due to the spiraling forms and the ambiguous perspective lines at the top and left sides of the canvas. Emulating the spiraling forms found in the drawing, I extended the spiraling staircase scene, and echoed this
language in the curving aqueduct below.
